UAW VALUES

The UAW fights for a future where working-class people enjoy fair wages, access to health care, time off the job, and the chance to one day retire in dignity and comfort.

The federal budget is among the greatest ways Congress shapes our lives. The budget reconciliation process allows Congress to make massive changes to some of the biggest federal programs—such as Medicaid, Medicare, food stamps, and more.

But corporations and billionaires have too much influence over politicians and are pushing a harmful agenda that takes from the working class to give to the rich.

THE FACTS

On May 22, the Republican-led U.S. House of Representatives passed a budget reconciliation bill called H.R. 1—also known as the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act.” But don’t be fooled by the name— this bill is a disaster for working people.

H.R. 1 would slash critical funds for UAW members, our families, and our communities—while giving away even more to the billionaire class.

Next, the bill goes to the Senate, where it could change. But here’s what is in the bill based on analysis from various sources, including the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office.

The bill would:

  • Make Trump’s original tax cuts for billionaires PERMANENT. The rich get richer.
  • Attack the Inflation Reduction Act and clean energy funding, eliminating billions of dollars in manufacturing incentives
  • Cut at least $715 billion from health programs, mainly Medicaid, which would mean:
    • Hospitals closing and health care workers losing jobs
    • State governments forced to make more cuts to essential community programs o Higher health care costs for everyone

“BEAUTIFUL” BILL TARGETS MEDICAID

  • Forces patients to pay more for care
  • Blocks states from using certain funding tools for health care
  • Makes it harder for seniors in high-cost areas to qualify for long-term care—threatening access to long-term care coverage for UAW retirees in areas with high housing costs

THE DAMAGE: BY THE NUMBERS

  • $500 billion triggered in Medicare cuts on top of the direct Medicaid cuts
  • $300 billion cut from food assistance (SNAP)
  • $350 billion cut from college aid, including:
    • Eliminating subsidized loans for undergrads
    • Cutting Grad PLUS loans
    • Gutting Pell Grants
    • Restructuring student loan repayments to be worse for many borrowers
  • 13.7 million people would lose health insurance under this bill
  • As of now, this “beautiful” bill guts programs that benefit those most in need—while increasing resources for the wealthiest 10% of households.
